For a relatively small community like Kailua, this library has a great selection and a wide variety of materials. Tons of great CD's to borrow, especially Hawaiiana. Check out the beautiful outdoor reading room with water cascades!
Our family loves this library! The children's section is perfectly set aside for the little ones to explore the shelves and find something to read. My older children like the selection of appropriate content chapter books and I have never had an issue finding or requesting (if i can't find) a book I want to check out! The A/C is a huge plus on a hot day :-)
What you want and need from a public library. Nice to have one so close to home. I've been going here since I was a kid.
We love libraries, but this (and the State) library's system is terrible! My kids love reading books, so they each get a small stack when we go; additionally I will get one or two as well. We were 2 days late with the books and we had to pay $10.00 in fines (I believe it is 50 cents per book per day)! That's just crazy. On top of that, my husband went to run errands for me since we have a newborn and they would not let him renew my book, nor check out new books for the kids (even with my library card number). They informed him that I had to call in to renew my book, and when I did so, they denied m my renewal since their "law/rule" is that you can only renew it over the phone the first time and this was my second renewal. Well, they didn't bother to tell my husband that when he was right in front of them. So ridiculous. We've enjoyed the Hickam Library much better. They have an all electronic system, send you a 3 day notice of books due (consistently and without fail, unlike the Kailua library which have been sporadic) and you can simply reply back to the email to renew. They make it so simple and user friendly! I really wish I had better things to say about the Kailua library, but the system is not community friendly.
