Super cool view. We went with grandparents and 2 small children. I wouldn't recommend that. The grandparents were unable to do the hike and it was definitely steep and rocky for the little kids. Definitely fun though and worth it just take those things into account.
This hike is amazing! We went up for sunrise, which in my opinion is what you must do because it's incredible. If you are planning to go for sunrise, bring a flash light to help you on the way up! It is pretty steep and can be a little bit slippery for the beginning part. Don't let the beginning discourage you because that is the worst part, it gets easier the further you go. The view at the top will not disappoint!
Beautiful views all around. The worst part is probably getting back to your vehicle with muddy shoes.. Bring other shoes to wear on the drive back and bag the ones you went up the trail on.
If you plan to sit on the pillbox, then prepare to go even earlier. If you get there right before sunrise, you probably won't get a spot. Headlamps are your friend.
The hike is isn't extremely difficult. The hardest part of the hike is the hill you encounter at the beginning of the trail. The incline is fairly steep and the dirt is usually really loose. There are a few sections where the loose rock and dirt can mess with your footing, especially on your way down. Fairly easy hike. Make sure you understand that you're hiking in a residential area. Respect the locals. Parking is minimal.
Parking wasn't that difficult to find early in the morning. You'll be able to find some residential spots. Do not pull up all the way to the hike entrance since there's no spots available there. No bathrooms anywhere along this hike.
Be careful on the hike if it rained the day before, because the trail has steep areas and they will become muddy if it rained. There were ropes to grab on the side near the fences, but there are also alternate paths along the way that lead to the same place.
This is a great hike, especially on a clear day. It isn't to challenging, so a good tennis shoe will work fine. The trail is a little hard to find as it isn't a normal trail head. But you should be able to figure it out as it is a very popular hike and very busy, so just follow everyone else. The view from the top is awesome, but a little hard to get really good pictures of the pillboxes as there are usually a ton of people sitting all over them. Overall, well worth the hike up there.
